These natural oils can add moisture and shine to your hair while nourishing your scalp to reduce dryness and flakes. They help eliminate dandruff and promote faster, healthier hair growth without needing expensive cosmetics or harmful chemicals.
To use these oils, massage a small amount of room temperature or slightly warmed oil into your roots and scalp, working it down to the tips like you would with conditioner. Put on a shower cap and let it soak for about half an hour, then wash your hair with an all-natural shampoo.
For thick, unruly hair, try Coconut, Argan, Avocado, or Extra-virgin olive oil. For thinner hair that needs more life, try Pomegranate Seed or Rosemary Oil. Jojoba oil is great for all hair types.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is incredibly beneficial for your hair. It’s rich in vitamin E and other nutrients, which your hair can absorb, making it thicker, shinier, and healthier with stronger roots. It’s excellent for all hair types, but make sure to use unrefined, organic virgin coconut oil.
You can use coconut oil as a deep conditioning treatment for dry hair or a hot oil treatment to combat dandruff and flaking. Its high level of antioxidants and antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties make it ideal for improving scalp health and fighting infections or fungi. It adds volume and shine while promoting faster hair growth.
To use it as a conditioner, warm a few teaspoons of coconut oil until it liquefies, then massage it into your scalp and work it down to the ends of your hair. Wrap your hair in a towel and leave the oil in for one to two hours, or even overnight for deeper conditioning. Rinse thoroughly and shampoo as usual. Regular use can eliminate dandruff without the chemicals found in store-bought shampoos. It also strengthens your immune system when absorbed into the blood. Apply a teaspoon of melted coconut oil to your scalp, massage for five minutes, and rinse out or leave overnight if you have severe dandruff.
Argan Oil
Argan oil, derived from the fruit of the native argan tree in Morocco, is known for creating beautiful hair. It’s filled with antioxidants, vitamin E, and omega 3 and 9 fatty acids, which nourish dry, coarse, or damaged hair.
Use argan oil to protect your hair from heated styling tools. Apply 2 to 3 drops to your hands, then distribute evenly through your hair from roots to tips. It also protects your hair from the harsh effects of swimming pool chemicals and saltwater. After swimming, shampoo and condition your hair, then apply a small amount of argan oil to the ends and comb through with a wide-tooth comb.
Extra-Virgin Olive Oil
Extra-virgin olive oil is rich in fatty acids and antioxidants, making it an excellent solution for many hair problems. It coats each hair strand to protect it from damage, especially from hot styling tools and dyes, making your hair appear sleeker and healthier.
To promote hair growth, combine two egg yolks with two tablespoons of olive oil, dilute with half a cup of cool water, and massage into your scalp. Leave for 20 to 30 minutes, then rinse. For dry or frizzy hair, use olive oil as a deep conditioning treatment by applying it to the ends of your hair and using a hair dryer on medium heat to help it penetrate. Leave it on for 45 minutes to overnight, depending on the extent of damage, then shampoo as usual.
Pomegranate Seed Oil
Pomegranate seed oil revitalizes fine or thinning hair, thanks to its rich punicic acid content. It penetrates deep into hair follicles, hydrating them and leaving your hair smoother and shinier without looking greasy. Apply a few drops to your hand and run through your hair from scalp to ends.
Rosemary Essential Oil
Rosemary essential oil helps darken gray hair over time and is best for naturally dark hair. Combine a few drops with a carrier oil like coconut or olive oil, apply from scalp to ends, and leave for about two hours before shampooing and conditioning as normal.
Avocado Oil
Avocado oil is packed with healthy fats, proteins, amino acids, and vitamins A, D, E, and B6, which repair damaged hair and prevent frizz and breakage. It also promotes faster hair growth by nourishing hair follicles. Massage a liberal amount onto your scalp and hair, then comb through. Leave it on for a couple of hours under a shower cap or towel, then shampoo and rinse well.
Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil, a liquefied wax extracted from a shrub native to the southwestern U.S., is rich in vitamins A, E, and D. It nourishes all hair types, especially effective for repairing damaged hair and promoting new growth. Warm a small amount in a microwave-safe bowl, apply starting about an inch from your scalp, and coat your hair evenly. Leave on for 20 minutes under a shower cap or towel, then wash and condition as usual.
