Craft Your Own Melt & Pour Loofah Soap

Using loofah soap is a fantastic way to exfoliate and get rid of dry skin. Instead of buying pre-made ones, you can easily make your own custom soaps in under an hour.

What are Loofahs?
Loofahs are actually vegetables from the cucumber family. When young, they are edible, but when fully ripened, they become a great natural exfoliant and an effective cleaning sponge. After peeling off the skin and removing the seeds from a ripened loofah, you’re left with a network of xylem fibers. These fibers become spongy when wet, making them perfect for scrubbing during a bath or shower. You can create your own loofah soaps using melt-and-pour soap and essential oils.

Supplies Needed
– Clear melt-and-pour soap base
– 12-inch piece of clean, dry loofah
– Yellow soap color (optional)
– Glass measuring cup
– Bamboo skewer for mixing
– Knife
– Silicone cupcake muffin pan
– Essential oil of your choice (we recommend Plant Therapy)
– Microwave

Preparing the Loofahs
Start by slicing the loofah into 1-inch thick sections and placing them into the silicone cupcake pan.

Melting the Soap
Cut the clear melt-and-pour soap base into small cubes, enough to fill your cupcake pan. Place the cubes into a glass measuring cup and microwave in 1 to 2-minute intervals until fully melted. Let the melted soap cool slightly, then add 20-30 drops of your chosen essential oil. Mix the essential oils into the soap base using a bamboo skewer.

Pouring the Soap
Pour the melted soap base into the loofah-filled cupcake tins, filling just below the top edge. If the loofahs float, place a weighted cookie sheet on top to keep them submerged until they cool completely.

Loofah soaps make wonderful gifts, so consider making a few extra to share with friends and family.
