Being sick is a drag, and a stuffy nose can make it even worse. While conventional decongestants can help, they often come with side effects like restlessness, trouble sleeping, vomiting, headaches, and even seizures. Instead of relying on these questionable drugs, try using eucalyptus shower disks to help you breathe easier.
These small shower disks are surprisingly effective and can be customized with different essential oils based on the benefits you need. Most DIY products use a low concentration of essential oils, but since these disks aren’t applied to the skin, it’s safe to use more. In fact, you need a higher concentration to really smell them, so don’t hold back on the essential oils.
Peppermint oil is the first ingredient in this recipe. It’s high in menthol, making it great for clearing sinuses. Plus, it’s energizing and perfect for a morning shower. Peppermint also has antibacterial and antiviral properties, which can help you recover from a cold faster.
Eucalyptus oil is the main star. Like peppermint, it has high menthol content and can clear nasal passages. Studies show eucalyptus is helpful for bronchitis and other respiratory issues. It also has antimicrobial properties to speed up recovery.
Baking soda gives the shower disks their structure, and arrowroot powder helps them dry hard. Store them in a pretty jar for easy access or gift some to a friend. You don’t have to wait until you’re sick to enjoy their refreshing aroma—they’re great for energizing your morning routine too.
Ingredients
– 1.5 cups Baking soda (360 grams)
– 2 tbsp arrowroot powder or cornstarch powder
– 2 tbsp and 1 tsp water
– 60 drops eucalyptus essential oil
– 40 drops peppermint essential oil
Equipment
– Small glass bowl
– Silicone mold or muffin tin
– Fork
– Airtight storage container
Instructions
1. Pour the baking soda into a small glass bowl and add the essential oils. Use a fork to break up any lumps and mix in the oils.
2. Sprinkle the water over the baking soda mixture and combine using your hands or a fork.
3. Firmly press the mixture into your chosen molds or a muffin tray. Let the disks dry overnight, then gently pop them out of the molds.
4. Store in an airtight container. To use, place one in the shower where it will get lightly hit by water but not directly under the shower head. The edge of the tub or a soap dish works well. This way, the disk will last longer and release its aroma closer to your nose.
