Crafting Your Own Beeswax Candles from Nature

I absolutely adore the look and scent of real beeswax candles. As a candle enthusiast, I’m drawn to their soft, warm light and natural fragrance. However, studies have shown that artificial fragrances in commercial candles can be harmful to our health. A 2001 EPA study revealed that candles with more artificial fragrances produce more soot, which can lead to indoor air pollution.

To avoid candles with artificial fragrances, you can switch to beeswax candles. While they might be more expensive than cheap paraffin ones, they’re actually quite easy to make at home. Beeswax candles not only burn clean but also help purify the air by emitting negative ions, which reduce dust, dander, and mold.

Here’s how you can make your own beeswax candles:

Supplies:
– 1 lb filtered beeswax pellets
– 1/2 cup coconut oil (I currently love Spring Of Life Coconut Oil)
– 3 half-pint canning jars
– 60 ply cotton braided wick (suitable for 2-3 inch diameter candles)
– A metal pitcher or an empty can
– A pot large enough to fit your pitcher for a double boiler setup
– Bamboo skewers

Instructions:
1. Put the beeswax pellets into the metal pitcher or can. Place the pitcher in a large pot and fill the pot with enough water to come up the outside of the pitcher. Heat the water to a low boil until the beeswax is completely melted.
2. While the beeswax is melting, glue the base of the wick to the bottom of the glass jars. Twist the excess wick around a bamboo skewer to keep it upright.
3. Once the beeswax is fully melted, add the 1/2 cup of coconut oil. Stir until the oil is melted and well mixed. Let the mixture cool for about three minutes, then pour it into the jars, leaving a one-inch space at the top. Allow the candles to sit undisturbed for at least 12 hours.
4. Once the wax is firm, trim the wick to about 1/2 inch.
5. Light your candles and enjoy!

Making your own beeswax candles is a fun and rewarding way to enjoy a healthier, more natural home environment.
