Sometimes, it just slips your mind—you head out and forget to apply sunscreen. Despite the habit, there are still those rushed mornings where sunscreen gets skipped. When my skin feels tender after a day in the sun, I reach for an aloe spray to provide some relief.
Aloe Vera is part of a large family of succulent plants, having over 500 species. The plants are recognizable by their thick, fleshy leaves that contain a gel-like substance. This gel is packed with water and holds the plant’s healing properties. Aloe Vera gel is widely used across the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food industries due to its many benefits.
Here’s what you need to make an aloe spray:
– 1/2 cup Aloe Vera gel
– 1 oz Vitamin E (optional)
– 10 drops of essential oil (optional)
– 1/4 cup witch hazel
– 5 tablespoons of water
– Bowl and spoon
– Spray bottle
Aloe Vera gel is known for soothing pain from burns, especially sunburns. It’s loaded with vitamins and minerals that help skin cells regenerate quickly.
Including Vitamin E is optional, but it can boost moisturization, especially after sun damage. It’s a potent antioxidant that, like Aloe Vera gel, enhances the skin’s healing process and could help prevent skin cancer caused by frequent UV exposure.
Witch hazel is another beneficial ingredient, known for reducing pain and inflammation. Its anti-inflammatory properties complement aloe, aiding the healing process further.
For essential oils, it’s all about your preference.
To make the spray:
1. Add Vitamin E to the Aloe Vera gel.
2. Add your chosen essential oil for fragrance.
3. Mix in the witch hazel and water. Stir to combine, using a fork if needed to keep the gel smooth. If the mixture is too thick, add water a tablespoon at a time until it can be poured.
Transfer the mixture to your spray bottle.
To use, simply spray the mixture onto any sun-damaged area. For an extra cooling effect, store the bottle in the refrigerator. The gel absorbs completely into the skin without leaving a sticky residue.
Enjoy your time outdoors safely!
